Remote Access Servers

Courant has a couple of systems that a user can use to access a shell from outside of the CIMS network.  The general access nodes for faculty, staff and most students, access.cims.nyu.edu, require the use of ssh and NYU MFA to connect. There is a separate system for students registered for classes in the CS Minors  program.

General Access Nodes

Note: CS Minors Accounts see other related section below.

For general access into the courant network, you'll need to connect using ssh to:

  • access.cims.nyu.edu (verify host identity)

Please do not use access.cims.nyu.edu for cpu-intensive jobs or course work.

As needed for research purposes, users can be granted the ability to use public-key authentication for remote access.

Once connected to this machine you can then run ssh to connect to any of the compute servers available to CIMS users.

Graphical Application Access

For general applications that require graphical interfaces (i.e. mathematica, matlab, xmaple, tecplot, etc.) you can connect using ssh to to access.cims.nyu.edu, using "ssh -Y access.cims.ny.edu" and then ssh to one of our compute servers, also with the -Y flag to ssh.

Note: You will need an X windows manager (i.e. cygwin/X11) and you will need to enable X Forwarding on your local machine to run remote graphical applications.

Once connected to this machine you can then run any of the graphical applications available in our software repository.

CS Minors Accounts (Only CS Minors)

Note: Regular CIMS accounts see the other related sections.

For general access into the courant network, you'll need to connect using ssh to:

  • i6.cims.nyu.edu (verify host identity)

Note: None of the other CIMS compute servers will work.
