Human language offers a powerful window into our thoughts -- we tell stories and ask questions about uncertain situations, offer and ask for explanations, talk about the physical and visual world, and describe our beliefs, goals, and plans. Understanding human language, then, seems to require knowing how the meanings of sentences relate to our own detailed conceptual knowledge about the world, and the ability to reason flexibly over both.
