Qi Lei named a co-Principal Investigator of ROME

We are thrilled to announce that Qi Lei, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Data Science at CDS, has recently been named a co-Principal Investigator of ROME, a project that received a significant grant from the Department of Energy (DOE). This grant is a part of the DOE's Energy Earthshots™ Initiative, which aims to advance clean energy technologies and meet ambitious climate and clean energy goals.

Qi’s involvement is in the ROME project (Reduced modeling with extreme data), which is among the 29 projects selected nationwide for this initiative. The project is led by two Courant Institute faculty—Associate Professor Benjamin Peherstorfer (also CDS-affiliated) and Professor Georg Stadler—and aims to develop innovative computational models to better understand and predict rare, extreme events like extreme weather, which are crucial in the context of climate change and energy sustainability. Qi’s research, focusing on distributed training and data privacy, will play a critical role in the project.
