Human-centered NLP in the LLM Era: Robustness and efficiency through socially and personally contextualised understanding

Understanding text within its author and audience context empowers our models to process natural language the way humans do. In this talk, I explore methods for modelling the human context holistically – including personal history, beliefs, and social environment – and their effect on downstream NLP tasks. I will also present our recent perspectivism-motivated experiments, where we apply personalisation methods to predicting annotators’ social norm judgments, and discuss opportunities for bringing the human-centered paradigm into NLG and into the base LLMs of our NLP systems.
