December 10, 2025
Sylvia Serfaty, Silver Professor of Mathematics, has received the 2025 Riemann Prize in Mathematics awarded by the Riemann International School of Mathematics. Selected by an international committee, the prize is awarded every three years to an outstanding mathematician aged 40-65 who has reached breakthrough achievements. Professor Serfaty is recognized "for her numerous contributions to mathematical physics, calculus of variations, and random matrix theory, including her detailed rigorous analyses of Ginzburg-Landau vortex dynamics, Coulomb and logarithmic gases, and beta ensembles, as well as her influential texts on these subjects."
The prize will be awarded during Riemann Prize Week, which will take place June 29th - July 3rd, 2026 at the Università degli Studi dell’Insubria in Varese, Northern Italy. The ceremony will be the culmination of week-long activities in honor of Professor Serfaty.
