NYU Announces Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science

November 13, 2025

University President Linda Mills announced the creation of the Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science in a message to the community this afternoon. “Today, we take the next step in the path that Richard Courant started us on,” President Linda G. Mills said in the University’s official announcement, “The creation of a new school that combines mathematics, its theory and application, with computer science and data science.”

The new Courant Institute School will include the Department of Mathematics, the Center for Data Science—which will become a tenure-granting academic department—and an expanded Department of Computer Science, which will be linked with the Tandon School’s Computer Science and Engineering department.

Gérard Ben Arous will serve as the Courant Institute School's Inaugural Dean. "An independent school devoted to scientific research and education has been a shared goal among our community members for decades," Professor Ben Arous wote in an email to the community, "and with today’s announcement, it has become a reality."
