Professor Emeritus Lu Ting (1925-2025)

August 5, 2025

We are sorry to report that Lu Ting, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, has passed away at the age of 100. Professor Ting was a renowned mathematician and physicist, celebrated for his significant contributions to vortex dynamics, mathematical modeling, and asymptotic analysis. His research into vortex-dominated flows and fluid mechanics has had important applications across various fields of physics and engineering.

Born in China in 1925, Lu Ting first came to New York University as a PhD student, completing his dissertation on the Aerodynamics of Blasts in 1951. He spent the entirety of his teaching career at the Courant Institute, advising sixteen doctoral candidates throughout the years.

We were lucky enough to celebrate Professor Ting's 100th birthday with a party in Warren Weaver Hall this past April. As Professor Ting's daughter Mary told the crowd at that event, "Courant was where you would find my dad seven days a week for seven decades. It really was his home." It was truly our privilege to honor Lu Ting's legacy and his lasting impact on our academic community.

We are grateful for Professor Ting's decades of exemplary service to our Institute, and we are sorry to lose our long-time friend. We send heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, students, and colleagues.
