I study atmospheric dynamics, focusing on stratosphere-troposphere coupling and the interaction of waves and mean flows. Recent work includes the atmospheric response to volcanic forcing, investigated with a hierarchy of idealized models and theory. The findings highlight the role of eddies in the underlying mechanism and give insight into why comprehensive models struggle to reproduce volcanic effects. This has led to further work on global modes of variability in reanalysis and communication between the tropics and extratropics.
