   Security/Software Updates (Linux reboots)

Compute nodes and desktop machines WILL BE REBOOTED on Thursday
(October 23rd). Updates will be applied to machines between 7:00pm and
midnight. In an effort to try and minimize any corrupted files or lost
work, please save all your data and logout of any Linux systems before
7:00pm. Many of the updates have already been made on several Linux
machines in the computer lab located in WWH 229. We urge people to test
any packages that are critical to their work and let us know if they
encounter any problems before the updates occur.

These machines have received the kernel update as of Friday October

Some significant software updates include (but are not limited to):

   Linux kernel (automatic REBOOT)
   various php and perl packages
   libre office
   ...and many more

This is quite a large update. As of this time only the kernel update
has been pushed to the above two pubboxes. The entire catalog of
updates will be applied to the Linux lab computers next week (hopefully
on Monday), before the Thursday rollout. When that has occurred, this
posting will be updated to indicate which machines the massive wave of
   updates has been applied to.
