.: Pedagogy:

I enjoy teaching and have made efforts to learn about the theory and practice of teaching. In particular:

  • I took a course on "College Teaching in STEM Disciplines" (Education 737). The final project turned into a short article for the MAA Focus's Teaching Time Savers segment. A long-form article describing the preliminary study that we performed has recently been accepted for publication.
  •   J. Meyer, M. Elsey, and V. Mesa. Students' perception of lesson objectives in introductory mathematics courses taught by teaching assistants. To appear in Studies in Graduate and Professional Student Development.
      M. Elsey, J. Meyer, and V. Mesa. Teaching time savers: Activities that make every minute count. MAA Focus, 29:6 (2009).
  • I completed the University of Michigan Graduate Teacher Certification Program in the Fall of 2010. A description of the program is here.
  • I participated in the Colloquium on the Science of Learning hosted by the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan in the Winter semester of 2009.
