This is an introduction to the methods of random matrix theory as they have been applied to combinatorial problems involving longest increasing subsequences.  The goal of the talk (not meant for the experts!) is to provide non-experts some idea of the methods and ideas involved in the many advances in recent years regarding the new limit laws associated with the 1/3 scaling.
