Andrew Majda ABSTRACT Coupled continuum/stochastic lattice models for complex multi-scale phenomena are increasingly important in contemporary engineering and science with applications ranging from material science to tropical convection. Here very recent systematic mathematical/computational strategies for coarse graining such systems will be described as well as the behavior of these and other families of coarse grained deterministic or stochastic closures in a simple family of models. These models can have bifurcations in the continuum dynamics, metastable multiple phases in the lattice model, and highly intermittent bursting behavior through simple interaction of these competing effects.
